Aggies use four-run eighth to take opening day win

Davis, Calif. - The UC Davis Aggies fought back from down 3-2 in the seventh inning to knock off the Utah Utes 6-4 Friday.

Junior Nick Johnson (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for UC Davis (1-0). The right-hander went two innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing one walk and striking out two.

Offensively, the Aggies were paced by junior Spencer Gedestad, who went 2-for-2 on the day with a double, two walks and an RBI. Junior Kyler Arenado compiled a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Alejandro Lara also contributed for UC Davis, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.

Trailing 3-0, the Aggies first put runs on the board in the sixth inning. UC Davis plated two runs off of Utah pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Gedestad.

The Aggies kept the Utes off the board before taking the lead in the eighth. The UC Davis offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of junior Colton Evans, which brought the Aggies lead to 6-3. Utah put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but UC Davis still held on for the 6-4 win.
