RIVERSIDE, CA -- UC Davis fell short in a 75-70 loss to UC Riverside on the road Thursday.
The loss dropped UC Davis' overall record to 5-9 and conference record to 0-1.
The Aggies had four players score in double figures, led by junior psychology major Mackenzie Trpcic, who had 15 points. Senior communication major Katie Toole tacked on 12 points and two steals and sophomore Makaila Sanders helped out with 11 points off the bench.
The UC Davis offense was very productive from three point land, making 10 threes on 32 attempts. Trpcic was the most prolific shooter for the Aggies, draining five treys in the contest.
UC Davis entered the second quarter tied at 13-13 after a tightly contested first period. UC Davis capitalized on three UC Riverside turnovers in the period, turning them into four points on the other end of the floor.
UC Riverside then took a 23-17 lead before UC Davis responding by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three from freshman biomedical engineering major Campbell Gray, to tie the game at 23. UC Riverside then took control, putting the Aggies at a 29-27 disadvantage heading into halftime.
UC Riverside continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 50-38 advantage before UC Davis went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Sanders, to trim its deficit to 50-43 with 0 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. UC Davis took advantage of two UC Riverside turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.
UC Riverside kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 72-64 advantage before UC Davis went on a 6-0 run, finished off by junior cell biology major Cierra Hall's three, to shrink the deficit to 72-70 with 31 seconds to go in the contest. UC Riverside responded and outscored the Aggies the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 75-70. UC Davis fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 27 points.
The Aggies are back in action on Saturday (Jan. 11), when they'll take on Hawai'i at 2 p.m. at The Pavilion.
