Johnson named MPSF Specialist of the Week

Former Aggie diver posted two event wins in Sunday's dual at Sacramento State

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior gymnast Cammi Johnson earned the first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Specialist of the Week award of the 2020 season, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon. This is the first career MPSF weekly honor for the human development major from Los Gatos, California.

Johnson posted two event wins during Sunday's dual meet at Sacramento State, taking part of a three-way tie for first place on uneven bars, then winning the vault title outright. She posted a career-high 9.775 on bars and a 9.700 on vault, then made her collegiate debut on balance beam with a 9.750.

Johnson, a first-team All-MPSF honoree on vault in 2019 and a two-time academic all-conference winner, continues an usual career trajectory. She competed for West Valley Gymnastics, but initially arrived at UC Davis as a diver. Johnson opted to return to gymnastics just weeks before the start of the 2018 season – almost three years since her last meet in the sport – but emerged into a consistent vault specialist after her February 2 debut. Then in 2019, she held the MPSF's highest national-qualifying score on vault while adding bars to her repertoire.

The Aggies host Cal, Stanford, Sacramento State and San Jose State for the ninth-annual NorCal Classic on Sunday. March-in is set for 2 p.m. at the Pavilion.
