UC Davis' overall record moved to 10-9 overall and 5-1 in Big West Conference play, breaking a tie with CSUN atop the league standings. It was the Aggies' 25th consecutive home conference victory dating back to 2017, improving to 7-2 at The Pavilion this year.
Led by 10 points from Meghann Henderson, the Matadors fell to 9-11 overall and 4-2 in league play with the loss.
Junior cell biology major Cierra Hall led the Aggies with six points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Sophomore anthropology major Kayla Konrad added nine points, nine rebounds and four assists from the bench and sophomore Makaila Sanders chipped in as well with a team-high 10 points from the bench. Every UC Davis player found its way into the scoring column as the Aggies rebounded from a rough start to shoot 67 percent in the second half, including 8-for-9 (.889) from the field in the fourth quarter alone.
The Aggies shared the ball well in Wednesday's game, racking up 17 assists on 22 made field goals. Hall, Konrad, and junior Mackenzie Trpcic, all finished with four assists on the night.
Trailing by two after the opening quarter, UC Davis cut the Matadors lead to 12-11 before going on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a three from Sanders, to take a 19-12 lead. The Matadors cut into that lead, but the Aggies still enjoyed a 24-19 advantage heading into halftime. UC Davis was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 16 points.
UC Davis continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from junior human development & Spanish major Emma Gibb, to expand its lead further to 36-25 with 3:23 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Matadors had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Aggies still entered the fourth quarter with a 39-29 edge. UC Davis knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 15 total points.
UC Davis kept widening that lead, expanding it to 50-39 before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Hall's layup, to grow the lead to 61-39 with 1:21 to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. UC Davis took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 22 points in the paint.
The Aggies are back in action on Saturday (Feb. 1) at 2:30 p.m., as they host UC Santa Barbara for the second meeting between the two programs in nine days. UC Davis posted a 56-46 win over the Gauchos to tip-off its Central Coast roadtrip last week.
