SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Junior
Mackenzie Trpcic scored eight of her team-high 10 points in the second half and the Aggies used a late 9-0 run over a four-minute span in the fourth quarter to rally back from a nine-point deficit, escaping San Luis Obispo with a 42-36 victory over host Cal Poly on Saturday at the Mott Athletic Center.
The Aggies win their fourth straight Big West Conference contest and reach the .500 mark for the first time this season, evening their record at 9-9 overall and improving to 4-1 in league play.
Led by Sierra Campisano's double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, the Mustangs fell to 4-12 overall and 1-4 in league.
Trpcic was the only Aggie in double figures as UC Davis posted its fewest points in a win since a 49-46 triumph over UC Riverside in the semifinals of the Big West Tournament in 2018. Sophomore
Kayla Konrad added eight rebounds for the Aggies, who forced Cal Poly into 22 turnovers on the day, posting 11 steals.
The Aggies made it a one-point game at the end of three quarters thanks to a 12-5 run, before Trpcic answered a jumper by Campisano with a personal 4-0 run — sparking UC Davis' winning kick. Senior
Katie Toole added a jumper and senior
Sophia Song, playing in only her second game back from injury, added a three-pointer for a 39-33 lead and force a Cal Poly timeout.
The Mustangs clawed back to within three points on a pair of free throws by Campisano, but 1-of-2 from the line by Trpcic, and two more by Toole, proved to be the difference as Cal Poly missed its final three shots.
UC Davis limited the Mustangs to just 29.5 percent shooting for the game, including 1-for-9 (.111) overall — and 0-for-5 from deep — in the final quarter. The Aggies, meanwhile, won despite shooting just 30.2 percent from the field, outscoring Cal Poly, 24-12, in the second half after the Mustangs took the lead at the break with a 17-3 advantage in second quarter scoring.
Junior
Cierra Hall added five points and six more rebounds, while Toole finished with eight points and three assists.
UC Davis returns home on Wednesday (Jan. 29) at 6 p.m., welcoming CSUN to The Pavilion.
