Aggies post second-place 192.975 in home quadrangular

Cunningham leads with 9.750-9.800-9.850 scores on V-UB-FX

DAVIS, Calif. -- Sophomore Cortney Cunningham won or tied for two event titles while junior Alyssa Ito and freshman Thea Michovsky each shared event wins on balance beam and uneven bars, respectively, boosting UC Davis to a second-place 192.975 team score in a home quadrangular gymnastics meet at the Pavilion Friday night.

George Washington won the team race with a 194.350 overall score. Sacramento State finished third at 192.675, while Alaska Anchorage placed fourth with a 189.600 total.

Cunningham, last year's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Freshman of the Year, matched Michovsky's 9.800 on bars as part of a three-way tie for the top spot. Cunningham followed with a 9.850 on floor, outdueling teammate Gabby Landess and her 9.825 for the win. In the meantime, Ito tied Alaska's Sophia Hyderally for the victory on balance beam at 9.850.

Cunningham and Landess each hit 9.750 on vault to lead a 48.350 in the opening rotation. However, UC Davis suffered a setback when two-time MPSF Gymnast of the Year Kelley Hebert was injured on her vault landing. Hebert was able to walk under her own power soon after, but withdrew from her two other events for precautionary reasons.

Michovsky and Cunningham bolsters the Aggie bars crew in the second rotation, but two falls saw UC Davis slip to a 47.950 for the event, and a 96.300 score at the meet's midpoint.

UC Davis stormed to a strong start on balance beam, with freshman Rachel Schuelke (9.725), senior Cammi Johnson (9.750), Landess (9.775) and Ito (9.850) had the team nearly on a 49-point pace. Hebert's absence and a counted fall brought the Aggies just shy of 48 (47.975) for the event.

Cunningham and Landess led a floor rotation that also saw Michovsky make her event debut at 9.650. Schuelke (9.675) and sophomore Shannon Sklow (9.700) chipped in solid scores en route to a team 48.700. That mark also helped UC Davis stay ahead of Sac State, which went 48.475 on vault, for the Causeway Cup win.

The Aggies return to action for back-to-back dual meets with San Jose State: at the Event Center on January 31, then back at the Pavilion on February 7.
