Richmond, Va. - It took senior
Tatiana Arias less than two minutes to score her second goal of the season on Saturday and the UC Davis Aggies just seven games to set themselves apart from every other team in school history with Saturday's 1-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth University.
The Aggies' scored quickly against VCU with Arias' goal coming at the 1:49 mark of the first period but it was an uncharacteristically slow game for UC Davis just a day removed from a 1-0 win over American.
"VCU came out hungry today and really took us off our own style of play," UC Davis Head Coach
Britt Broady said. "At certain points in the game we weren't as quick to make adjustments as we usually are and we struggled to connect passes through the midfield."
At 5-2, the 2019 Aggies now own the best start to a season in the program's 11 year history and are on pace to obliterate numerous other season marks.
In just seven games, they're already over halfway to the all-time program mark of eight wins in a season set in 2012 and 2015. Saturday's win also tied the program mark for shutouts in a single season with the Aggies already posting four such wins in 2019.
Led by senior goalkeeper
Chelsea Bigelow, who leads the America East in save percentage (.884) and shutouts (4) with the second-lowest goals against average (.930), the Aggies' defense owns the second best goals allowed mark in the America East conference at .83.
Winners of their last three games, the Aggies have been able to overcome being outshot in two of their last three due to that improved defense but that's a balance Broady would like to see shift.
"I continue to be very happy with our team defense," Broady said. "We were able to stifle numerous VCU fast breaks and provide Chelsea with predictable shots. Moving forward, however, we need to possess the ball a little more and relieve the pressure on our backfield."
With VCU's eight shots on Saturday, the Aggies have allowed just 10 shots on goal over their last three games.
"This was a great game for us to have a bit of a gut check and I'm pleased that we were able to earn the win though we did not play our best," Broady added. "That takes a lot of heart to dig deep when things are not going your way."
Saturday won't be the only gut check these Aggies are faced with as they have a short turnaround before heading back to Davis.
UC Davis will stay in Richmond to play University of Richmond on Sunday at 9 a.m. PST/12 p.m. EST, which will be streamed on
