Aggies fall in second game of back-to-back set

Richmond, Va.  - UC Davis led for 47 minutes of Sunday's road tilt with University of Richmond following sophomore Milou Korthouwer's first period breakaway goal but two late goals by the Spiders (5-3) in the fourth period prevented UC Davis from sweeping their Virginia road trip as the Aggies fell 2-1.

Playing their third game in the last four days, the Aggies were on decidedly more tired legs than those of Richmond but UC Davis Head Coach Britt Broady praised the Aggies' ability to stick to their system and play more connected through the midfield.

"Richmond plays fast and runs hard," Broady said. "We ran with them for 50 of the 60 minutes before we simply could not sustain that level of exertion."

Korthouwer scored on a breakaway with an assist from senior Lauren Gengarella at the 4:22 mark of the first period and the Aggies went on to lead for the next 47 minutes of game time before Richmond came back in the fourth.

The Spiders scored on a scramble in front of the goal with a little under nine minutes to go and again off a corner deflection just three minutes later.

UC Davis finishes the trip 2-1 and established new marks for the best start to season and equalled the all-time record for shutouts in a single season.

"I am proud of this team's effort and heart on the field," Broad added. "We stuck to our own style of hockey through adversity. Their tanks were empty yet we still pressed hard, tackled back, and built the play through the midfield. Today, they have shown me our culture is cemented in our core and doesn't waiver with the conditions of the game. I'm very proud of them."

The Aggies will get a rare two weeks between games before they head to Iowa City to take on No. 21 Rutgers and Iowa on Oct. 5 and 6 respectively. Those games are two of just three non-conference matchups left on the schedule before America East play begins. UC Davis will also play their first home game since Sept. 1 on Oct. 8 against Central Michigan.
