SAN DIEGO - Friday's non-conference thriller in San Diego lived up to its potential as two of the nation's top program's squared off at Torero Stadium in the first of eight straight road games for UC Davis. In a game that featured two teams receiving votes in the national polls, UC Davis out-shot San Diego, 10-9, and would have been the first team to score were it not for the Toreros' goalkeeper, who made fingertip saves on all three of the Aggies' shots on goal.
But it was the host Toreros that escaped with a 1-0 win by scoring the only goal of the evening in the 74th minute, a shot that ended up being the difference in an exciting non-conference clash between two undefeated teams.
UC Davis will now head to Loyola Marymount for Sunday's 3 p.m. game, and will arrive to Sullivan Field with a 3-1-1 record. San Diego remains undefeated and will continue its season with a 5-0 mark.
In addition to senior midfielder Marte Formico, who recorded a shot on goal in all three of his strikes — both game-high totals — five other Aggies created clean looks at USD's net, missing the mark by mere inches each time. Junior midfielder Nabi Kibunguchy and sophomore midfielder Connor Tipton each recorded two attempts, with sophomore forward Robert Mejia, sophomore midfielder Andy Velasquez and junior defender Jake Haupt finishing with one shot apiece.
