DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis out-shot Green Bay 15-9 in Sunday's non-conference match at Aggie Soccer Field, and came inches away on numerous occasions from scoring on multiple opportunities. But it was a freak play in the 68th minute that was the difference in the match, and allowed the visiting Phoenix to escape Davis with a 1-0 win.

The Aggies will enter their upcoming road trip through Oregon with a 2-1 overall record; Green Bay will return home with a 3-1 mark.

Led by sophomore forward Casey Palmer's three shots and two shots on goal, the Aggies' out-shot GB by a 15-9 margin, and recorded four shots on goal throughout the second half. Were it not for Phoenix goalkeeper Courtney Klatt, who made five saves and singlehandedly prevented most of those shots from finding the back of the net, it would have been the Aggies who celebrated a victory on Sunday.

But it was a blast from GB's Ellie Vasey that led to the game's only goal, which took place right before a NCAA-mandated water break in the second half (due to weather).

With numerous players from both teams rushing towards the far post of the Aggies' goal, UC Davis netminder Nicki Rucki made an outstanding diving save to her right to prevent Vasey from scoring just a handful of yards away from the near side of the 18-yard box. Shortly thereafter, most fans at Aggie Soccer Field were not sure how to react after the ball rolled to a stop just inside the far post, since Rucki deflected the ball with her fingertips on that initial shot.

It was during that break when officials confirmed that an own goal took place.

Even though it suffered hard luck on that play, UC Davis kept the ball in the Phoenix' half of the field for the following 20-plus minutes, and knocked Green Bay's defense to its heels due to the Aggies' relentless attack, which yielded a barrage of shots on goal.

In all, 10 Aggies recorded a shot throughout the afternoon, with 11 of the team's 15 taking place after halftime. In addition to Palmer, junior midfielder Janessa Staab also finished with a team-high three shots.

Women's soccer's next two matches will take place on the road, at Portland State (Friday) and Oregon State (next Sunday, Sept. 8) before it returns to Aggie Soccer Field the following week for its next home match.
