DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis dominated play during Sunday's non-conference match at Marquette, out-shot the Golden Eagles by a 15-13 margin, and saw senior goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley collect six saves in a hard-fought battle that ended in a scoreless draw.

The Aggies will return to Davis with a 1-0-1 record and start prepping for Friday's 5 p.m. home opener vs. CSU Bakersfield. Marquette will continue its season with an identical mark.

"Considering we were playing away, our results this past weekend were outstanding and a positive way to open the season. To earn two shutouts, which includes a victory against a Big Ten opponent and another shutout against a Big East team, shows we have great players who are only going to improve as the season continues," said head coach Dwayne Shaffer.

"I am proud of this team. We played intelligent soccer and showed a lot of fight all weekend long," he added.

Junior midfielder Nabi Kibunguchy led the Aggies' attack, and finished with a game-high four shots. Senior midfielder Marty Formico and sophomore forward Jye Citizen also recorded multiple shots, and finished with three and two respectively.

In all, nine players tested Marquette goalkeeper Jackson Weyman in a game that evolved into a defensive showcase.

"I thought we played very well, especially considering we had a quick turnaround following a tough win at Wisconsin. Lapsley and our back four — Jake Haupt, Kibunguchy, Max Glasser and Sean Cooper — were outstanding all game long," said Shaffer.

After opening with their longest trip of the season, the Aggies will return to action in the only home games featured in the team's 2019 non-conference slate. Following Friday's matchup against the Roadrunners, UC Davis will host Air Force in Sunday's 1 p.m. contest at Aggie Soccer Field before embarking on an eight-match road swing that starts at San Diego on Sept. 13.
