DAVIS, Calif. – Director of Cross Country & Track and Field
Rahn Sheffield announced on Thursday that he plans to pursue other track and field coaching opportunities once his contract concludes this summer.
"We thank Coach Sheffield for his service to the university and wish him the very best in his professional endeavors moving forward, especially as he prepares for potential opportunities related to the Olympics," said Director of Athletics
Kevin Blue.
Throughout Sheffield's tenure, UC Davis won three Big West Conference team championships, and enjoyed a strong presence at NCAA regionals each season.
"I appreciate the opportunities UC Davis has given me. It was a pleasure working with such an exceptional group of student-athletes, who learned to overcome adversity and bring home championships. I will cherish memories of their athletic, academic, and personal growth," Sheffield said.
The 25-year coaching veteran joined UC Davis' staff in 2013 as an assistant coach for the Aggies' sprinters. The following year, he became track and field's interim head coach; in 2016, Sheffield was promoted to Director of Cross Country & Track and Field.
Under Sheffield's tutelage, 71 UC Davis student-athletes qualified for NCAA regionals, with another eight advancing to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field nationals.
In addition to back-to-back Big West titles in 2013 and 2014, he led the women's track team to another league championship in 2016 — a season ended with Big West officials bestowing Big West Coach of the Year honors to Sheffield.
A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
