IRVINE, Calif. -- Junior Cooper Morrison had three hits, including a double, but UC Davis couldn't come away with a victory over UC Irvine, losing by the score of 10-4 on Sunday, May 19.
With this in-conference loss, UC Davis drops to 19-29, 9-15 in the Big West. The victory for UC Irvine brings their overall record to 34-16, 15-6 in conference matchups. Freshman Michael Frias grabbed the win, bringing his record to 1-1. Senior Chris Brown took the loss for the Aggies, falling to 3-5 on the season.
UC Davis used Brown and four other pitchers to complete the ballgame. Brown threw the game's first 0.2 innings, giving up seven runs, all of them earned, on six hits. The other four hurlers combined to allow three runs on eight hits, walk four, and strike out six.
The five UC Davis pitchers worked their way through the UC Irvine lineup facing 44 hitters, retiring 12 via flyout.
Senior Garret Kelly led the way offensively for UC Davis, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Morrison put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a double. Sophomore Tanner Murray also helped out for UC Davis, going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. UC Irvine's offensive attack was led by sophomore Jake Palmer, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs on the day.
Collectively, UC Davis pushed across four runs, but left chances on the board, stranding nine over the course of the game. Those four runs came on 11 hits, four of which went for extra bases, including a home run. The Aggies managed their offensive output without much extra help from UC Irvine pitchers, who handed out only one free pass.
The Aggies resume road action for their final three games of the 2019 season at Utah beginning Thursday (May 23) at 6 p.m. MT.
