DAVIS, Calif. — Sophomore communication major
Brooke Yanez mowed down the Hawai'i lineup in a pair of starts last weekend, leading the Ventura, Calif., native to her sixth Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week award as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Yanez's nine career awards now rank her in a four-way tie for sixth on the Big West's all-time list, while her six honors this year match Cal Poly's Sierra Hyland (2017) and Long Beach State's Erin Jones-Wesley (2011) for third on the single-season list.
Closing out the regular season on the islands, Yanez finished 1-1 in helping the Aggies to their first-ever series win in Honolulu, posting a 1.15 ERA and holding opponents to a .131 average in 18.1 innings of work. Over that span, the left-hander struck out 32 batters against only two walks, scattering eight hits overall — only one of those coming in the series finale.
Yanez threw 11.1 innings in the opener, tying a school Division I single-game record with 18 strikeouts to match Jessica Hancock's total against the Rainbow Wahine back on Feb. 15, 2009. She allowed only one hit through the first seven innings of work as UC Davis tied the game in the seventh to force extra innings.
According to the NCAA totals entering the week, the 18 strikeouts were tied for the third most in a Division I game this season.
Only 24 hours later, Yanez picked up right where she left off in the series finale, striking out 14 more against only one walk in a 5-1 victory, throwing 5.2 innings of no-hit softball and facing just three over the minimum for the contest. The performances — which were her 10th and 11th double-digit strikeout games of the year — gave her 273 strikeouts for the season, Justine Vela's mark of 272 in 2012, establishing a new school Division I single-season record, and moving her into eighth place on the Big West's single-season list.
With the announcement of the 64-team NCAA Tournament field on Sunday, UC Davis officially wrapped up its most successful Division I campaign to date, finishing the year with a 39-14 overall record and a 13-8 mark in Big West play to finish third. Among the numerous individual marks, this year's version of the Aggies set nine school Division I single-season records at the plate, new marks for both winning (.736) and fielding percentage (.970), and three more in the circle.
