Junior Chase Lyford picked up his second win for UC Davis, improving to 2-3 on the season. Junior Dylan Spacke took the loss for Long Beach State, which dropped his record to 0-2. The Aggies victory puts their 2019 record at 15-22, 6-9 in the Big West. With the loss, Long Beach State falls to 8-33 this year, 2-10 in conference play.
UC Davis used senior Chris Brown and five other pitchers to complete the Aggies victory in the ballgame. Brown threw the game's first 1.2 innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on five hits, walking three and fanning one. The other five hurlers combined to allow one run on 11 hits, walking three, and fanning four.
The six UC Davis pitchers worked their way through the Long Beach State lineup facing 54 hitters, retiring 17 via groundout.
At the plate, UC Davis was paced by sophomore Spencer Gedestad, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs while walking once. Junior Cooper Morrison put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Junior Alejandro Lara also helped out for the Aggies, going 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI. Junior Calvin Estrada led the attack for the Long Beach State lineup, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs on the day.
Overall, UC Davis pushed across their six runs on 13 hits, one of which went for extra bases. The Aggies improved on their attack by drawing six walks from Long Beach State pitchers. UC Davis did some two-out damage as well, going 6-for-16 in those situations, with two of those hits coming from Morrison.
UC Davis' next four games will take place on the road, starting with Tuesday's non-conference match at Nevada. First pitch against the Wolf Pack is set for 6 p.m.
