Aggies wrap up historic first season at Big West

UC Davis falls to CSUN, No. 12 LBSU in Friday's action

MALIBU, Calif. -- UC Davis' inaugural beach volleyball season came to a close at the Big West Conference championship, as the Aggies were eliminated on the first day on 5-0 losses to CSUN and 12th-ranked Long Beach State Friday. The Aggies entered as the fifth seed in the tournament, hosted by CSUN at Zuma Beach.

UC Davis finishes its first year with an 8-10 overall record.

The Aggie pairings of junior Lauren Matias and senior Heather Reed at No. 1, and sophomore Paloma Bowman and freshman Josephine Ough each forced a third set in their morning matchups with the Matadors. Matias/Reed took the second frame by a 21-16 margin, then battled to a 16-14 loss in the deciding set against Danielle Molinari and Seyvion Waggoner. The Bowman/Ough team scored a 22-20 win in the opener against Darbi Honeycutt and Mikaela Maughan before losing its second and third sets.

Long Beach State won the No. 1 through No. 4 matches in straight sets, but the No. 5 tandem of freshman Nicole Andrade and sophomore Alexa Rockas snared a 21-19 second-set victory from Tyler Spriggs and Alexis Patterson. However, the 49ers rebounded with a 15-7 win in the third.

UC Davis also battled to just two-point losses at threes and fours against LBSU. Katherine Kedeshian and Demari Webb dropped by their opener by a 23-21 decision, while Savanah Schroeder and Rose Holscher fought to a 21-19 effort in their opener at No. 4.

The Big West Conference tournament consists of a seven-team, double-elimination draw through Saturday.
