DAVIS, Calif. -- Sophomore Tanner Murray had three hits, including two doubles, and UC Davis pitchers limited Long Beach State to four runs as the Aggies brought home a 6-4 victory on Friday, April 26 at Phil Swimley Field.
The Big West victory advances UC Davis' overall record to 13-22, including 4-9 in conference play. Long Beach State, on the other hand, falls to 8-31, 2-8 in the Big West. Sophomore Brett Erwin earned his fourth win of 2019 for the Aggies, bringing his record to 4-3. Sophomore Adam Seminaris took the loss, falling to 2-7 on the season.
Erwin made the start for UC Davis. The righty went 5.1 innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on five hits, with three walks and one strikeout. The Aggies then went to the bullpen, relieving Erwin with sophomore Tim Wieser, who threw 2.2 innings, giving up one run and two hits with no walks and three punch-outs. Junior Steve Ouellette finished the game for UC Davis, securing the contest's final three outs without allowing a run while giving up no hits. Ouellette also picked up his fourth save on the year for the Aggies.
As a group, UC Davis pitchers allowed the four Long Beach State runs, all earned, on seven hits, walking five and striking out four. The Aggies did an excellent job limiting damage, pitching especially well with runners on base. They held Long Beach State to a clip of 2-for-13 in those situations in the ballgame.
In the batter's box, UC Davis was paced by Murray, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs while walking once. Junior Cooper Morrison furnished a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI while finding his way aboard once via walk. Senior Cameron Briggs also contributed for the Aggies, going 2-for-3 and getting on base once via free pass. Junior Aidan Malm led the attack for the Long Beach State lineup, going 2-for-3 with two doubles on the day.
As a unit, UC Davis plated their six runs off of 10 hits, one of which went for extra bases. The Aggies helped their attack by drawing five free passes from Long Beach State pitchers. UC Davis also did significant damage on the basepaths, swiping three bags on the day, with one coming from Murray.
UC Davis and Long Beach State return to action tomorrow (Apr. 27) at Phil Swimley Field with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. PT.
