DAVIS, Calif. -- The No. 2 tandem of junior Lauren Matias and senior Heather Reed, and the No. 5 duo of freshman Nicole Andrade and sophomore Alexa Rockas each won both of their respective matches, leading UC Davis to a pair of wins in exhibition action at the UC Davis Beach Volleyball Courts Wednesday. The Aggies defeated nearby Sierra College by a 4-1 final, then shut out Gavilan College, 5-0.
The Matias/Reed pair swept Sierra's No. 2 team of Kapri Pelle and Sarah Shively, 21-10, 21-17; then moved up to the No. 1 court to dispatch Mikeila Banda and Sarah Welby in split sets, 21-18, 12-21, 15-7. The Andrade/Rockas team won both matches in straight sets: 21-9, 21-12 against Wolverines Cloe Gunter and Gabby Roberts, then a 21-19, 21-18 battle against the Rams' sister duo of Lex and Noel Chavarria.
Aggies Rose Holscher, Katherine Kedeshian, Savanah Schroeder and Demari Webb also picked up two wins apiece on Wednesday, although in different configurations. Holscher teamed with Kedeshian for a No. 4 win over Sierra, then united with Schroeder for a No. 3 victory against Gavilan. Webb paired up with Schroeder at No. 3 against Sierra, then with Kedeshian at No. 4 against Gavilan. Each of the four permutations won in straight sets.
Sierra finished the day with a 4-1 win over Gavilan in neutral-site action.
UC Davis returns to action in nine days to wrap up its inaugural beach season at the Big West Conference Championship on April 26-27. The double-elimination tourney takes place at Zuma Beach in Malibu.
