Aggies break out the bats in Bay Area sweep

UC Davis combines for 22 runs on 26 hits in wins over Weber State and Nevada on Saturday

SAN JOSE, Calif., and SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Fighting through the elements on day two in the Bay Area, the UC Davis offense thundered through two more opponents at the Silicon Valley Classic II, combining for 22 runs on 26 hits in wins over Weber State and Nevada on Saturday afternoon.

The two victories improved the Aggies to 17-4 overall on the year, coming from behind twice to hand Weber State a 13-8 defeat in the opener, before making the 11 minute drive to Santa Clara and cruising past Nevada by the score of 9-1 in five innings.

With the losses the Wildcats fell to 4-12 on the year in the third meeting between the two teams in 2019, while the Wolf Pack tumbled to 11-8 overall.

Junior Isabella Leon finished 6-for-8 (.750) at the plate and reached base seven times, while teammate Marisa Given added five hits, three runs scored, a triple, and four RBI. Senior Meghan Bradbury ended the day 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a double, home run, and five RBI, while also walking four times.

In all, six different players collected multiple hits, seven scored two-or-more runs (including four by freshman Megan Bower), and nine different hitters drove in at least one run.

An eight-game home stand is scheduled to begin on Tuesday (March 12) at 3:30 p.m., as the Aggies host Sacramento State at La Rue Field. UC Davis then welcomes four other teams to Northern California for the 2019 Capital Classic Tournament beginning Friday (March 15).

GAME 1: UC DAVIS 13, WEBER STATE 8
UC Davis used a five-run fourth to erase an early four-run deficit, then rallied for seven runs in the sixth — all with two outs — to come back from two runs down en route to a 13-8 victory over Weber State at the San Jose State Softball Stadium.

The 13 runs scored on Saturday marked the fourth time this season that the Aggies have reached double figures and the second-highest total of the season behind the 15 runs scored against UTEP on Feb. 16 in a 15-2 win. The seven runs scored in the sixth also stand as the second-highest total in an inning this year behind the 12 runs scored against the Miners in that same game

An RBI double by Bradbury in the first put the Aggies on the board, but they trailed 5-1 entering the fourth when they were able to rally for their first comeback of the day. UC Davis sent nine hitters to the plate in the frame, scoring on a two-run triple by Given and back-to-back RBI singles off the bats of Riley Siegel and Maddie Rojas to square the game at 5-all. After a pitching change, pinch hitter Delaney Diaz rolled a ball to the right side, deep enough to score Maddie Rojas and a 6-5 lead.

The Wildcats weren't done scoring either, plating a run in the home half of the fourth and two more in the fifth to regain the lead, only to have the Aggies answer in a big way during the decisive sixth, when they sent 12 batters to the plate, taking the lead for good.

Back-to-back walks were followed by back-to-back fielder's choices, putting Weber State just one out away from getting out of a huge jam before things unraveled.

UC Davis began to claw their was back in it as Bradbury drove in her second run of the day with a single and was followed by run-scoring knocks from Alyse Rojas and Given for a 9-8 lead. Following a pitching change, the hit parade continued as a two-run single by Maddie Rojas and a pinch-hit RBI single by Sophie Mayol — her first career hit — increased the lead to 12-8, and an error on a single by Leon capped the scoring, plating Maddie Rojas with the final run of the day.

Sophomore Brooke Yanez then entered in relief of winning pitcher Katie Kibby (5-3), retiring six of the seven batters she faced, striking out five while allowing a harmless walk in the seventh to nail down the win.

Leon finished a career-best 4-for-4 and reached base five times, surpassing her previous career high of three hits against UTEP and Georgetown earlier this season and posting the most hits by an Aggie since Alyse Rojas finished with four against CSU Bakersfield on Feb. 17 of last season.

Given, meanwhile, tied a career high with her three hits, joining a group of five UC Davis batters with multiple hits on the day, and drove in three runs along with Maddie Rojas, while six different players scored two runs.

GAME 2: UC DAVIS 9, NEVADA 1 (5 inn.)
After a short break and quick drive across town to the SCU Softball Field, the Aggies made quick work of Nevada, scoring four times in the first two innings before breaking the game wide open with a five-run fifth en route to the 9-1 victory.

After nailing down in the win in the opening game of the day, Yanez improved to 11-1 overall on the season with her complete-game effort in the nightcap, allowing an unearned run on four hits and striking out three.

Meanwhile, UC Davis scored early and often off three Wolf Pack hurlers, opening up a 2-0 lead on an RBI double by Bower and a run-scoring groundout by Alyse Rojas in the first, before doubling the lead thanks to a Bradbury bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly by Yanez for a 4-0 advantage.

Nevada got a run back in the home half of the third before the Aggies opened up the floodgates in the fourth, as Bradbury launched her fifth home run of the season — a two-run shot — over the wall in left, Yanez followed with her third of the year — a solo shot, and Given tacked on an RBI single after an Alyse Rojas double to cap the scoring.

Leon and Given each finished with a pair of hits on the day as eight of the nine starters collected at least one — including freshman Gabby Zagone, who collected the first hit of her career with a second-inning single.

Bradbury's three runs driven in marked her seventh multi-RBI game of the season, while Leon moved into a tie with Bower for the team lead in multi-hit games with seven on the year. With three hits in the opener and another in the nightcap, Alyse Rojas has now reached base safely in each of her last 11 games — the longest such run by an Aggie thus far this season.
