PISMO BEACH, Calif. -- UC Davis lost a pair of matches to nationally ranked opposition to wrap up action at the three-day Big West Challenge women's beach volleyball tournament, hosted by Cal Poly at Pismo Beach. The Aggies lost to the No. 7 hosts then No. 9 Long Beach State, both by 5-0 team scores.
UC Davis moves to 4-7 in its inaugural season of beach volleyball.
Freshmen Rose Holscher and Demari Webb were the only duo to pick off a set, claiming a 21-16 victory in the second frame against Cal Poly's No. 4 tandem of Delaney Peranich and Sam Manley. The Mustang team then claimed the deciding set by a 15-10 score.
All other Aggie teams lost in straight sets, although the No. 2 pairing of Heather Reed and Savanah Schroeder took LBSU's Nicci Reinking and Zoi Konstantopoulou to the brink with a 21-19 battle in their opener, then fell 21-15 in the second set.
Sunday's action also saw the collegiate beach debuts of two more Aggies, as Claire Jackson and Rachel Churilla assumed the No. 5 court against Cal Poly. Jackson is a transfer from Rutgers who redshirted the 2018 fall indoor season, while Churilla walked on to the indoor team last spring and earned playing time in two matches as a reserve during the indoor season.
The Aggies resume action closer to home with a road match at Sacramento State this Friday, followed by neutral-site action against Boise State and Pacific on Saturday. All three matches take place at Livermore Park in Folsom.
