Aggies sweep first day of Big West Challenge

UC Davis beats Sacramento State (4-1) and CSU Bakersfield (3-2)

PISMO BEACH, Calif. -- UC Davis picked up wins against leaguemates Sacramento State and CSU Bakersfield to sweep Friday's portion of the three-day Big West Challenge collegiate beach volleyball tournament hosted by Cal Poly. The Aggies took down Sacramento State, 4-1, then followed with a 3-2 victory against CSU Bakersfield.

UC Davis improves to 4-3 in its inaugural season of beach volleyball.

The top three Aggie pairings won both ends of Friday's doubleheader. The No. 1 tandem of Lauren Matias and Jane Seslar used split sets to take down Sac State's Mikaela Nocetti and Sarah Davis, then dispatched CSUB's Briannah Mariner and Mattison Degarmo by scores of 21-5 and 21-8. The Aggies No. 2 team of Heather Reed and Savanah Schroeder swept Hornets Skyler Takeda and Ashtin Olin, then came back from a first-set loss to outlast Roadrunners Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat.

At No. 3, Josephine Ough and Paloma Bowman took down Sacramento State's Cianna Andrews and McKenna Smith in three frames, then came away with two close set victories in a 21-19, 21-18 triumph over Bakersfield's Sidney WIcks and Hana Makanova. Another highlight for UC Davis was the collegiate debut of Nicole Andrade, a freshman from Hollister and one of the few beach-only players on the roster.

The Aggies' Matias-Seslar duo is now 4-3 for the season. They are the only two Aggies to have played together in every match.

UC Davis continues action at the Big West Challenge on Saturday with matches against CSUN (1 p.m.) and No. 6 Hawai'i (4 p.m.). All seven conference teams converged on Pismo Beach for the weekend event.
