UC Davis to close out regular season at Fresno State

DAVIS, Calif. — Following a four-week break from competition, UC Davis equestrian returns to action this Saturday (Mar. 30) for the final regular season meet of its inaugural 2019 season. The Aggies will make their way to the Student Horse Center in Fresno, Calif., for the second-half of a home-and-home set against UEC colleague, Fresno State, beginning at 1 p.m. 

ABOUT FRESNO STATE
The No. 9 Bulldogs (5-8) began their 2018-19 campaign at the Willis Invitational in Waco, Tex… After capturing a narrow 8-7 victory over UEC rival UT-Martin, the Bulldogs fell in back-to-back duals with Delaware State, 6-9, and No. 7 Baylor, 4-11… Hosted the annual Fresno State Invitational on Nov. 9-10, welcoming No. 5 South Carolina and No. 4 Baylor… Fell to the Gamecocks, 7-10, and upset the Bears, 10-8… Downed No. 9 Delaware State in a second meeting with the Hornets by a margin of 13-5… Following their 12-4 win over UC Davis on Mar. 2, the Bulldogs closed out their road slate with a 5-14 loss to No. 5 Oklahoma State (Mar. 9)… As the No. 3 seed at the United Equestrian Conference Championships hosted at UT-Martin, the Bulldogs advanced to the championship round after upsetting the No. 2-seeded Delaware State Hornets, 9-7… But Fresno State could not find a way around top-seeded SMU, falling, 2-14, in the finals… Saturday's contest marks the final regular season home finale at the Student Horse Center for the 2018-19 season. 

SERIES NOTES
The Bulldogs lead the all-time series record with the Aggies, 1-0… The two teams met for the first time in program history on Mar. 2, 2019 when No. 9 Fresno State logged a 12-4 win over UC Davis. 

UP NEXT
Following the conclusion of the regular season, the Aggies are slated to make their inaugural appearance at the 2019 National Collegiate Equestrian Association National Championships on Apr. 17-20 at the Extraco Events Center in Waco, Tex. 

WISE PICKS UP UEC RIDER OF THE WEEK NOD - 3/4
Freshman animal science and management major Laura Wise picked up her first career United Equestrian Conference Rider of the Week nod after securing the only UC Davis point in Equitation on the Flat in the Aggies' home finale meet against Fresno State on Mar. 2. The Bainbridge Island, Wash.-native finished the week 1-0 in the event, defeating Fresno State's Brooke Nelson, 70-66. The award marks the first of Wise's career as well as the third conference award for the Aggies on the season so far.

AGGIE DUO CAPTURES UEC WEEKLY HONORS - 2/19
Senior genetics and genomics major Laurel Jackson (Reining) and junior animal science major Sabin Marquardt (Equitation Over Fences) picked up their first career United Equestrian Conference Rider of the Week accolades after the duo collected both Aggie points scored against No. 4 Texas A&M… Jackson (1-0) earned the Aggies' lone Reining point against No. 4 Texas A&M when she defeated Marissa Harrell—who entered Saturday's meet with a 5-1 record--with a team-high score of 67.5 on the road at the Hildebrand Equine Complex… Marquardt (2-0) also collected the only UC Davis point in Equitation Over Fences, defeating Rhian Murphy, 82-75. Earlier this season, Marquardt came out on top in the Aggies' first-ever home meet against Delaware State, edging Zoe Kirsch, 80-79.
