Beach volleyball sweeps inaugural matches

Aggies begin their historic first season with two wins against Sac State

DAVIS, Calif. -- The No. 1 pair of freshman Jane Seslar and junior Lauren Matias won both of their matches in straight sets, while the No. 4 sophomore tandem of Paloma Bowman and Chelsea Maeglin also snared two wins, leading UC Davis beach volleyball to a doubleheader sweep of Sacramento State in the program's inaugural match Saturday afternoon. The Aggies won the morning dual by a 4-1 margin, then captured the afternoon tilt, 3-2.

The Aggies open their historic first season with a 2-0 record. The Hornets fall to 0-2. This also marks the first victories for UC Davis head coach Ali McColloch.

Seslar and Matias defeated the Sac State pairing of Mikaela Nocetti and Macey Hayden for each win, claiming a 21-16, 21-19 victory in the morning match, then a 22-20, 21-14 triumph in the afternoon contest. The Bowman/Maeglin team experienced a wilder ride en route to its two wins: 21-13 and 28-26 in the morning, then a 5-21, 21-17, 15-5 victory in the day's second match.

The Aggies No. 2 team of Heather Reed and Josephine Ough and No. 5 crew of Ally Reyes and Jackie Graves each split its contests. Reed/Ough beat Paige Swinney and Cianna Andrews in straight sets, 21-11, 21-7, in the morning. They then fell to the Skyler Takeda/Ashtin Olin pairing in the afternoon. The Takeda/Olin team was the only Sac State team to go 2-0 for the day.

Reyes and Graves went three sets against Sac State's Paige Calvin and Kayla Stubbert on both ends of Saturday's twinbill, with a 13-21, 21-17, 17-15 win in the morning, then a 10-21 21-16, 15-9 loss in the nightcap.

The second of the two duals came down to the No. 3 court. With the team score tied at 2-2, Savanah Schroeder and Rose Holscher prevailed against the Swinney/Andrews team in split sets, 21-8, 17-21, 15-11.

UC Davis returns to action in one week, taking on Stanford and Cal as part of a tripleheader on March 9. Both matches take place at the Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium.

MATCH NOTES
• Saturday's opener was originally scheduled as a road match at Livermore Community Park in Folsom, but unplayable conditions forced a move to UC Davis' new beach facility on the Howard Intramural Field.

• The match experienced a slightly delayed start due to rainfall the night before, but got underway thanks to efforts spearheaded by senior associate athletics director Michael Lorenzen... Lorenzen and Kevin McColloch (husband of head coach Ali) spent the morning hours digging swales and channels on each court to drain the water out of the playing areas, all in an effort to start the matches close to the scheduled 11 a.m. start time.

• Saturday's matches mark the first two of at least four total meetings between UC Davis and Sacramento State in 2019, and the first two of three that count toward the Causeway Cup race... Both teams are members of the Big West Conference in beach volleyball, but only the "home and home" meetings are scored in the Cup race... The Aggies now lead the multisport competition by a 43.33-10 margin... There are 90 points at play in 2018-19, meaning the next UC Davis victory will clinch the Causeway Cup race.
