MALIBU, Calif. — Sophomore
Tanner Murray led the Aggies with his third consecutive 2-for-4 finish against the Waves—completing a 6-for-12 performance on the series--but the Aggies came up short falling to Pepperdine, 0-4, in Sunday's series finale at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Murray led the Aggies with a 6-for-12 finish on the series to go along with two RBI and one run scored. The Ben Lomond, Calif.-native currently paces the squad with an eight-game hitting streak.
The Aggies fell to 6-8 mark on the year while the Waves improved to an even 6-6 record.
Senior
Chris Brown (2-2) suffered the loss for UC Davis after allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out three over 5.1 innings of work before turning it over to the bullpen. Junior
Andres Lara, sophomore
Nick Johnson, and redshirt junior
Chase Lyford allowed a combined one run on two hits over 2.2 innings of relief to give the offense a chance.
Jonathan Pendergast (2-1) earned the win for the Waves after holding the Aggies scoreless over eight innings on the mound, scattering four hits and striking out nine.
Pepperdine broke a four-inning scoreless deadlock in the home half of the fifth after Quincy McAfee plated Wyatt Young with a double down the right field line. The Waves then added two more runs in the sixth on another double by Mike Malinchak, giving Pepperdine a 3-0 advantage.
The Aggies threatened in the visitor half of the third after senior
Cameron Briggs and Murray kept the inning alive for the Aggies with a pair of two-out singles, but UC Davis could not convert.
Logan Denholm doubled in the fourth—his fifth of the season—while Murray collected his second hit of the afternoon in the sixth, but another run for the Waves in the seventh would shut the door for good, lifting Pepperdine to a 4-0 win.
Murray led the Aggies with his eighth multi-hit performance of the season and will enter Tuesday's mid-week battle at Causeway rival Sacramento State with an eight-game hitting streak.
UC Davis now looks ahead to a pair of mid-week meetings first on the road at Sacramento State (Mar. 12), then at Phil Swimley Field as the Aggies host Pacific on Wednesday (Mar. 13) beginning at 2:30 p.m.
