Aggies continue through Pac Coast draw

130th Annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championships Saturday Schedule
Consolation Quarterfinals

(9) Eric Steidlmayer/Adam Levie vs. Dylan Flanagan/Charlie Schuls (VIL), Noon
(7) Ivan Thamma/David Goulak vs. (6) Blaine Hovenier/Clay Thompson, Noon

LA JOLLA, Calif. — UC Davis men's tennis duo of 2016 alum Brett Bacharach and former assistant coach Michael Meyer fell in the main draw round of 32, while the other five Aggie teams played through the consolation bracket. Two pairs are set to compete in the consolation quarterfinals Saturday at noon, with the possibility of meeting in an all-UC Davis semifinal.

Although the current UC Davis players were unable to win a first round matchup, several courts were extremely close, falling 8-6 or in a tiebreaker. Due to the format of the tournament, all players are guaranteed at least two matches, with the opportunity to compete throughout the consolation draw.

Head Coach Eric Steidlmayer and 2016 alum Adam Levie, as well as the Aggies' No. 1 team of David Goulak and Ivan Thamma, all had a full day of tennis, as both teams played four matches to advance to the consolation quarterfinals. Steidlmayer and Levie will take on a Villanova team, while Goulak and Thamma play a No. 6 seed from Encino, Calif., and Venice, Calif. in Saturday's quarterfinal. Goulak and Thamma upset a No. 2 seed, Billy Grifith and JT Nishimura (California Alums) in the fourth round by a dominant 8-2 score. If both UC Davis teams are victorious in the consolation quarterfinals, they will square off against one-another in an all-Aggie semifinal on Sunday morning.

After receiving a double-bye, Dariush Jalali and Chethan Swanson rebounded from a Thursday evening loss to a Cal team by upsetting one of the No. 9 seeds in the third round of consolation, 9-8(3). The same duo defeated Daniel Landa and Alex Scemanenco by a nearly identical score: 9-8(2).

Due to inclement weather forecasts, Saturday's schedules may change, but the tournament is slated to shift formats to be best two out of three sets, with a Coman tiebreaker played at 6-6.
