DAVIS, Calif. — Sophomore
Alyse Rojas scored the game's first run on an error in the first inning and starter
Brooke Yanez and the UC Davis defense made it stand, posting the team's first shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over SeattleU on Friday evening to close out day two of the 2019 Aggie Invitational at La Rue Field.
In a game halted in the sixth due to darkness, UC Davis improved to 9-2 overall with the victory, improving to 3-0 at its own tournament while extending its longest winning streak since claiming four straight wins from Feb. 16-17 as part of the Bulldog Classic last season.
The Redhawks fell to 6-5 overall with the loss in their tournament opener, mounting a pair of late-inning threats but coming up empty before the game was called.
Yanez (6-1) limited SeattleU to just three hits in five innings, striking out six in the complete-game effort, winning her third straight decision. Carley Nance (3-3) suffered the loss, allowing an unearned run on three hits while striking out one in five innings.
Sophomore
Alyse Rojas singled with one out in the home half of the first to get things started for the Aggies, scoring two batters later when
Meghan Bradbury's ground ball was misplayed with two outs, allowing Rojas to score for the lone run of the contest.
Sophomore
Riley Siegel doubled to lead off the second, but was stranded at third, while Yanez singled in the fourth before SeattleU was able to turn a double play to escape any further damage.
Meanwhile, Yanez and the defense held the Redhawks at bay, retiring eight straight hitters after a lead-off single by Olivia Viggiano, who finished 2-for-3 after a two-out single in the third broke up the Aggies' run.
Madison Cathcart got a rally started for SeattleU, reaching on an error to lead off the fourth and moving to second on a wild pitch, but was left there after a strikeout, pop out, and ground ball.
The Redhawks had their best chance to tie the game in the fifth after Cherise Silvan doubled down the rightfield line to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to third. However, Yanez struck out Alyson Matriotti and got Viggiano to chop a ball back to the circle to end the inning.
Day three of tournament play continues on Saturday morning (Feb. 23) at 9 a.m., as UTEP takes on SeattleU, with the Aggies following with back-to-back games against the Redhawks and Idaho State at 11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., respectively. Saint Mary's and the Bengals close out the day with the final game at 3:15 p.m.
