FLAGSTAFF, AZ -- UC Davis went into halftime trailing Northern Arizona 39-37, but rallied from the deficit to defeat the Lumberjacks, 71-61, on the road Sunday.
UC Davis moved to 4-5 overall after the win.
The Aggies had three players score in double figures, led by senior American studies major Nina Bessolo, who had 15 points. Junior psychology major Mackenzie Trpcic tacked on a career-high 13 points, four assists, and four steals, and senior communication major Katie Toole chipped in as well with 11 points and two steals -- her ninth consecutive game with double digits.
Sophomore environmental science and management major Sage Stobbart pulled down four offensive rebounds and eight overall to pace the UC Davis offense which grabbed 10 boards and turned them into seven second chance points.
UC Davis' defense held Northern Arizona to only 38.5% shooting from the field. The Aggies also limited Jacey Bailey to 4-of-15 shooting in the game. The Lumberjacks didn't have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed five second chance points while UC Davis cleared 25 defensive rebounds.
UC Davis struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-11 at the end of the first quarter.
UC Davis then cut the Lumberjacks lead to 30-26 before going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from junior cell biology major Cierra Hall, to take a 33-30 lead. The Lumberjacks then came roaring back to take a 39-37 lead heading into halftime.
After intermission, UC Davis rallied to tie it up at 41-41 before going on a 7-0 run to grab a 48-41 lead with 5:12 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Aggies added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 53-45 edge. UC Davis took advantage of five Northern Arizona turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.
UC Davis kept widening that lead, expanding it to 56-47 before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Toole's layup, to grow the lead to 66-47 with 5:39 to go in the contest. The Lumberjacks narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Aggies still cruised the rest of the way for the 71-61 win. UC Davis fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 18 points.
The Aggies are back in action on Sunday (Dec. 15), when they'll travel to Minnesota for an 11 a.m. PT tip-off.
