MORAGA, Calif. -- Senior communication major Katie Toole totaled 30 points to lead an Aggie comeback from down 17 points, but UC Davis fell to Saint Mary's by the score of 83-74 on the road Tuesday.
UC Davis fell to 0-4 overall following the defeat.The Aggies had two players score in double figures, led by Toole, who had 30 points. The senior hit her first nine shots on the night, finishing 12-of-19 from the floor overall, draining a trio of three-pointers, and hitting all three of her free throws en route to her career-high night — the most points by an Aggie scorer since Morgan Bertsch finished with 30 against UC Riverside on Feb. 14, 2019.
Junior psychology major Mackenzie Trpcic added 10 points, six assists and three steals and sophomore anthropology major Kayla Konrad added eight points and two steals.
The UC Davis offense was very productive from three-point land, knocking down eight three-pointers on 24 attempts. Toole was the most prolific shooter for the Aggies, draining three treys in the contest.
UC Davis forced 21 Saint Mary's turnovers while committing 10 themselves in Tuesday's game. The Aggies turned those takeaways into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. Senior psychology major Sophia Song led the way individually with three steals.
UC Davis struggled out of the gate, falling behind 24-8 at the end of the first quarter.
UC Davis then cut the Gaels lead to 36-24 before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Toole, to narrow its deficit to 36-29. The Aggies were unable to narrow the gap any further, but didn't lose ground either and entered halftime with a 38-31 deficit.
Saint Mary's continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 48-40 advantage before UC Davis went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from senior American studies major Nina Bessolo, to trim its deficit to 48-47 with 4:25 to go in the third. Saint Mary's countered and stretched its lead to 59-54 heading into the fourth. UC Davis took advantage of 12 Saint Mary's (CA) turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of takeaways.
UC Davis kept the Gaels from increasing their lead before going on a 5-0 run to even the score at 62 all with 7:33 to go in the contest. The Aggies couldn't turn their rally into a victory, as the Gaels outscored them 21-12 the rest of the way to hand UC Davis the 83-74 loss.
The Aggies are back in action on Friday (Nov. 22), when they'll take on San Francisco to open a four-game homestand at 6 p.m.
