Aggies clinch first victory with 79-67 triumph

Toole posts third-straight 20-point game, Bessolo adds 15 in the win

DAVIS, CA -- UC Davis senior Katie Toole posted her third consecutive 20-point outing, sharing game-high honors with 25 points while senior Nina Bessolo added 15 more off the bench, helping lift the Aggies to their first win of the season, 79-67, over San Francisco on Friday night at The Pavilion.

UC Davis' overall record moved to 1-4 with the victory.

The Aggies had two players score in double figures, led by Toole, who hit 10-of-16 from the field. Senior American studies major Nina Bessolo hit 6-of-7 from the field and 3-of-3 from beyond the arc off of the bench and senior psychology major Sophia Song added eight points, four assists, five rebounds and two steals.

UC Davis utilized great ball movement in Friday's game, piling up 19 assists on 30 made field goals. Individually, junior psychology major Mackenzie Trpcic dished out the most for the Aggies with a career-high seven assists.

The UC Davis defense held San Francisco shooters to just 37.3% from the field.

After falling behind 18-17, UC Davis went on a 7-0 run with 2:51 left in the first quarter to take a 24-18 lead. The Aggies then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 24-20 advantage. UC Davis relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 24 points.

San Francisco fought back to tie the game at 26-26 before UC Davis went on a 10-0 run starting at the 7:11 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Toole, to take a 36-26 lead. The Aggies kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 47-37 advantage heading into halftime. UC Davis dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 23 points close to the basket.

UC Davis continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Bessolo, to expand its lead further to 56-41 with 4:22 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Dons had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Aggies still entered the fourth quarter with a 59-47 edge. UC Davis knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 12 total points.

UC Davis kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by junior cell biology major Cierra Hall's layup, to grow the lead to 65-48 with 7:28 to go in the contest. The Dons narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Aggies still cruised the rest of the way for the 79-67 win. UC Davis took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 20 points in the paint.

The Aggies are back in action on Tuesday (Nov. 26), when they'll take on Causeway Cup rival Sacramento State at 6 p.m.
