DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis fell to Santa Clara 62-61 at home Saturday on Tia Hay's buzzer-beating shot with only one second left in the game.
The loss dropped UC Davis' overall record to 0-3.
Senior communication major Katie Toole led the Aggies with 21 points. Junior cell biology major Cierra Hall also added seven points and seven rebounds and sophomore environmental science and management major Sage Stobbart chipped in as well with three points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Led by Hall's four offensive rebounds, UC Davis did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 12 second chance points.
UC Davis' defense held Santa Clara to only 35% shooting from the field, including 12.5% from beyond the arc.
After playing to a 9-9 tie early in the game, UC Davis went on a 5-0 run with 5:35 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Toole, to take a 14-9 lead. The Aggies then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 20-15 advantage. UC Davis relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 20 points.
Santa Clara fought back to tie the game at 25-25 before UC Davis went on a 12-0 run starting at the 5:20 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from freshman biomedical engineering major Campbell Gray, to take a 37-25 lead. The Broncos cut into that lead, but the Aggies still enjoyed a 37-28 advantage heading into halftime.
UC Davis continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 10-0 run to expand its lead further to 48-32 with 3:53 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Broncos had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Aggies still entered the fourth quarter with a 49-34 edge. UC Davis' bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled five of the team's 12 third-quarter points.
Santa Clara then erased the UC Davis lead in the game's final quarter for a 62-61 comeback victory.
The Aggies are back in action on Tuesday (Nov. 19) at 6:30 p.m., when they'll take on Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif.
