FRESNO, Calif. -- Sophomore anthropology major Kayla Konrad pulled down a career-high tying 11 rebounds, but UC Davis fell to host Fresno State, 73-65, on the road Tuesday.
UC Davis' overall record dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
The Aggies had three players score in double figures, led by junior psychology major Mackenzie Trpcic, who had 12 points. Senior communication major Katie Toole added 11 points and senior American studies major Nina Bessolo helped out with 11 points.
Led by junior cell biology major Cierra Hall's three offensive rebounds, UC Davis did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in five second chance points.
UC Davis' defense held Fresno State to only 39.3% shooting from the field, including 26.1% from beyond the arc.
After falling behind 8-5, UC Davis went on a 12-0 run with 5:00 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Hall, to take a 17-8 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. UC Davis relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 17 points.
UC Davis kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 8:23 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Bessolo, to increase its lead to 23-12. The Bulldogs then came roaring back to take a 28-25 lead heading into halftime.
UC Davis' deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Aggies faced a 51-41 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. UC Davis knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 16 total points.
UC Davis narrowed its deficit to 61-53 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Bessolo's three, to shrink the deficit to 61-58 with 4:37 to go in the contest. Fresno State responded and outscored the Aggies the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 73-65.
UC Davis returns to the floor for its home opener on Saturday (Nov. 16) at Noon as the Aggies host Santa Clara at The Pavilion. Admission is free.
