FULLERTON, Calif. – Of the three goals
Adam Mickelson scored this season, none was more important than the one he earned Saturday night because it lifted UC Davis to a 2-1 victory in its double-overtime match at Cal State Fullerton.
That goal allowed men's soccer to remain in first place alongside UC Irvine since it also defeated Cal Poly on Saturday. UC Santa Barbara, the third team that entered tonight's round of games tied for first with the Aggies and Anteaters, slipped to third place since its game at CSUN ended in a scoreless tie.
Since there is no mid-week slate of games taking place this upcoming week, UC Davis and UC Irvine will enter next Saturday's round of games atop the Big West standings.
Mickelson's goal also preserved UC Davis' undefeated record in overtime this year, improved his team's overall record to 10-4-2 overall and Big West mark to 4-1-1. Cal State Fullerton will now enter its final regular season match with records of 10-7-1 and 2-5.
By scoring his first career goal in the 11th minute,
Emmanuel Doherty helped UC Davis take an early 1-0 lead in its final road game of the season.
However, the Titans evened the score 84 seconds later; that 1-1 score remained untouched until Mickelson scored his second game-winner of the season.
Not only did the Aggies out-shoot Fullerton by a 19-12 margin, it finished with three times as many shots on goal (9-3) and twice as many corners (10-5).
UC Davis' final regular season game will take place at Aggie Soccer Field on Saturday, November 2 (3 p.m.), against Sacramento State.
