Sanchez' first goal of 2019 highlights Senior Day against Stanford

Davis, Calif. - Sophomore Brooke Sanchez scored her first goal of the season and UC Davis held Stanford scoreless in the second half but it wasn't enough to overcome a steep first half deficit in a 3-1 loss to the 16th-ranked Cardinal.

The Cardinal struck quickly, going ahead 1-0 at the 4:35 mark of the first period and again less than four minutes later to lead 2-0 after one. Corinne Zanolli's goal 4:58 into the second period made it 3-0 before the Aggies began to push back.

UC Davis' backline that was instrumental in limiting Cal two days prior began taking away possessions before they could reach the goal and the Aggies' wound up racking up 10 shots to Stanford's 16 for the game.

The Aggies finished with five corners to Stanford's three, including three in the first period.

After a number of near-makes right in front of the goal, Sanchez took a deflection from Audrey Matthew and put the Aggies on the board with 4:29 to go. Though the Aggies' attack continued pushing to take advantage of the momentum shift, the Cardinal were able to walk away with their second America East West Division win.

Stanford were the fifth ranked opponent UC Davis have faced this season, not counting Michigan State who entered the NFHCA Top-25 immediately after playing the Aggies in September.

Now halfway through their conference slate, the Aggies will travel to Ohio for games against University of Ohio and Miami (Ohio) on Oct. 26 and 27 before finishing out the season at home against Cal on Oct. 30 and at Stanford on Nov. 1.
