ATHENS, Ohio – Audrey Matthew wasted no time scoring the first goal of Saturday's non-conference match at Pruitt Field in Athens, Ohio, when she hit the back of the cage to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. Shortly thereafter,
Sara Janetzky doubled their team's lead in the 22nd minute to give UC Davis a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
That 2-0 score remained untouched until the 53rd minute when Ohio cut its deficit in half, but that was its lone highlight of the day because UC Davis' defense frustrated the Bobcats all day long, and stepped up in crunch time to help the Aggies open their two-game road trip through the Buckeye State with a 2-1 victory.
Matthew's strike was her second of the season,
Izzy Porco earned her second assist on Janetzky's team-high third goal.
UC Davis will now head to Oxford, Ohio, for Sunday's 10 a.m. (PT) match at Miami with a 7-7 overall record. Saturday's game was the final one of the year for the Bobcats, who end their season at 8-6.
The Aggies tested Ohio all afternoon long, by placing seven of their 11 shots on cage. They earned nine penalty corners, compared to the Bobcats' six, and even experienced a bit of bad luck since Ohio recorded two defensive saves.
Had UC Davis scored on either (or both) of those shots, Ohio would have faced a larger deficit heading into the final quarter, instead of trailing the Aggies by two.
In addition to the phenomenal play of her back-line, UC Davis goalkeeper
Chelsea Bigelow turned in another impressive performance and finished with eight saves.
Janetzky and
Grace Austin each posted a game-high three shots; all of the former, and two of the latter's attempts were on goal.
UC Davis will have an opportunity to win its third non-conference game in a row in tomorrow's 10 a.m. (PT) match at Miami. A live stats link available at
