No. 17 Aggies shutout Bulldogs to open Northwest trip

Tipton and Mickelson finish with three-point nights as UC Davis scores three for the third straight match

SPOKANE, Wash. — Freshman managerial economics major Connor Tipton and junior sociology major Adam Mickelson each finished with three-point nights with a goal and an assist apiece, while sophomore managerial economics major Jacob Rudolph also found the back of the net for the first time this season, lifting No. 17 UC Davis to a, 3-0, victory over host Gonzaga on Friday afternoon at Luger Field.

The Aggies remained unbeaten on the year, improving to 4-0-1 overall on the season while scoring three goals for the third consecutive match. UC Davis out-shot the host Bulldogs, 16-9, for the match, limiting Gonzaga (0-3-2 overall) to just four shots on frame.

Tipton's first career goal — and game-winner — came in the 20th minute as Mickelson chipped a ball to the front of the net that the freshman from Sonora, Calif., headed home from the left side for the 1-0 lead.

Mickelson then wasted no time extending the lead with his team-high third goal of the year just 4:20 into the second half as Tipton and freshman neurobiology, physiology, and behavior major Robert Mejia combined on passes to find the Montana native, who finished to an open net on the left side to make it 2-0.

For Mejia, it was his team-high third assist of the year, while Tipton logged his first career assist. Mickelson, who leads the team with nine points overall, now has a goal in his last two contests, a point in each of the team's last three matches, and a point in and four of the team's five contests overall.

Rudolph then capped the scoring with less than three minutes to play in regulation off a nice feed from senior history major Brian Quintero down the middle of the field. The Clovis, Calif., native won a footrace to the ball before stepping around a defender at the top of the box and finishing a curling shot around the Gonzaga keeper to the upper right corner to cap the scoring.

Tipton, who finished with a team-high five shot attempts on the day, and Rudolph became the seventh and eighth different goal scorers for the Aggies this season, helping them to a 10-3 advantage in the scoring column.

Meanwhile, junior global disease biology major Wallis Lapsley posted his third shutout of the year — and the seventh of his career — making four saves to help lower his goals against average to 0.39 on the season after he entered the weekend ranked No. 25 in the nation in that category.
