SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Alicia Sloss and
Janae Gonzalez each found the back of the net, while
Alexis Smith finished with four saves en route to her third shutout of the season, lifting visiting UC Davis to a, 2-0, victory over Cal Poly in Big West Conference action on Sunday afternoon.
The victory improves the Aggies to 4-6-2 overall and 1-1 in Big West play on the year, snapping a six-match winless streak dating back to a, 1-0, victory over New Mexico back on Aug. 31.
UC Davis matched its win total for all of last season with Sunday's triumph, while the two goals equalled the team's total from all of 2017. The Aggies finished with multiple goals in a match for the third time this year and the first since a, 2-1, victory over Sacramento State on Aug. 26.
The Mustangs, who earned their first win of the year with a 1-0 victory over CSUN on Friday, fell to 1-9-3 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Sloss, a human development major, gave the Aggies the early lead in the 29th minute, turning a long ball from freshman
Margot Ridgeway into her third goal of the season. A short corner was cleared to near midfield by the Cal Poly defense, but right to Ridgeway, who served a pass back toward a waiting Sloss at the top of the box.
The Torrance, Calif., native took a touch and fired a shot that deflected off a Mustang defender and into the net at the right post for a 1-0 lead and, eventually, her second career game-winner.
It was then Gonzalez's turn in the 56th minute, earning a corner off her own shot from distance that was pushed over the bar by Cal Poly goalkeeper Sophia Brown. Gonzalez, making only her third appearance of the season, stepped to the ball in the left corner and curled a ball toward the back post that bent in and kissed off the woodwork for her first score as an Aggie and a 2-0 advantage.
That was more than enough for the UC Davis defense, which held the Mustangs to without a shot attempt until the 23rd minute while Smith was stellar in the shutout, including a huge stop in the 27th minute of Mackenzie George on the doorstep right before the Aggies converted for their first goal of the match.
Smith also got some help from sophomore communication major
Nicole Carson, who stood her ground on the goal line to clear a ball off the line put toward the net by Sophia Mendoza in the 83rd minute that preserved the shutout.
Led by four shots apiece from Gonzalez and sophomore neurobiology, physiology, and behavior major
Aliyah Walker, the Aggies out-shot the Mustangs, 14-10, for the match, including a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
In its only match of the week, UC Davis wraps up a four-match road swing against Hawai'i on Sunday (Oct. 7) at 8 p.m. (HT) in Honolulu.
