MUNCIE, Ind. — The first Aggie to log a three-goal game since 2011, freshman midfielder Eline van den Bosch set a new program record with a career-best seven-point game against the Cardinals on Monday afternoon, notching the game-winner in overtime to complete the hat trick and leading UC Davis to a 5-4 victory over Ball State at BSU Turf Field in Munci, Ind.
Junior forward Lauren Gengarella got things started for UC Davis with her fourth goal of the season, while freshman Brooke Sanchez logged her third career goal tying the game at three apiece, and junior goalkeeper Chelsea Bigelow finished the day with six saves.
The Aggies improve to an even 6-6 overall record thanks to their second overtime victory of 2018, and will open America East Conference play this Sunday (Sept. 30) at nationally ranked Stanford. The Cardinals fell to 0-8 on the season and will face Mid-American Conference colleague Appalachian State in their next game on Friday (Sept. 28).
The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on Monday afternoon, scoring their second goal off a deflection from Bigelow's save.
But the Aggies were quick to answer, halving Ball State's lead thanks to Gengarella's fourth goal of the year that was assisted by van den Bosch, who then tied the game a goal of her own just two minutes later, assisted by sophomore Nicola Prebble.
Trailing 2-3 at the start of the second half, Sanchez made quick work scoring her third collegiate goal to tie the game, 3-3, with 30 minutes left to play. Van den Bosch's second goal of the day gave the Aggies a one-goal advantage with less than nine minutes remaining, but another score by Ball State would be enough to force overtime.
Seven minutes into the overtime period, it was van den Bosch yet again who gave the Aggies what they were looking for, scoring the game-winner to complete the hat trick and cap off the day with a respectable seven-point performance against the Cardinals.
The Aggies return to action on Sunday (Sept. 30) at 12 p.m. opening America East Conference play on the road against nationally ranked Stanford.
