UC Davis heads to Cal Poly, then returns home to host Hawai'i Friday

DAVIS, Calif. -- An almost minimal amount of rest separates UC Davis women's volleyball from last weekend's Wildcat Classic at Arizona and the start of Big West play, as the Aggies kick off their conference slate on Tuesday at Cal Poly. Match time is 5 p.m. at Mott Athletics Center.

UC Davis faced arguably its toughest weekend of the preseason down in the Grand Canyon State, battling New Mexico State to a five-set marathon on Friday afternoon, then defeating UT Martin in four sets hours later. Oddly, the UC Davis Aggies outdueled the NMSU Aggies in kills (53-50), hitting average (.186-.145), aces (8-6), blocks (13-7) and total points (74-63) yet lost the match. The team wrapped up its tournament schedule with a four-set loss against host Arizona, a team receiving votes in the AVCA's Top 25 Coaches Poll that week.

ABOUT THE AGGIES: Senior OH Emily Allen posted 46 kills and had almost a third of the team's 457 swings over the weekend... She leads the team with 4.09 kills per set, good for fifth in the Big West... Junior Ally Reyes took over the libero jersey at the Wildcat Classic and responded with 30 digs against host Arizona, a team that ranked among the nation's best in both kills (fourth) and hitting percentage (24th) entering the weekend... Reyes had 32 digs for the year leading into that match... Allen and senior OPP Nicola Moore each garnered all-tournament honors, with Moore hitting 23-8-51 (.294) with five blocks.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS: Cal Poly (10-1) jumped from No. 22 to No. 14 in the AVCA Top 25 thanks to back-to-back upsets of then-No. 9 UCLA on September 7, the highest national ranking since acheiving a similar 14th back in 2008... Sisters Torrey and Adlee Van Winden sisters account for 324 of the team's 558 total kills, with Torrey leading the way with 4.93 per set... Torrey had kills totals of 17, 21 and 22 in wins over Mississippi State, Wichita State and North Texas last weekend; while Adlee chipped in 20 against the Shockers in Saturday's opener of the North Texas Challenge.

LOOKING AHEAD: UC Davis returns home to host Hawai'i on Friday at 7 p.m. before returning to the road for four straight Big West dates through October 6... That road stretch features the Aggies' lone appearances on ESPN3, namely the Oct. 5 date at CSUN and the Oct. 6 match at Long Beach State... The Big West Conference announced its fall ESPN slate last Tuesday.
