BURLINGTON, Vt. — With less than five minutes remaining in the first half, freshman forward Shannon Wong notched her first collegiate goal to put the Aggies on the board during Sunday afternoon's neutral-site game against nationally ranked America East Conference colleague, No. 18 Maine. UC Davis continued to battle but could not close the gap on the Black Bears, resulting in a 7-1 victory for Maine at Moulton Winder Field in Burlington, Vt.
Sophomore transfer Audrey Matthew notched her second defensive save of the season, while freshman Eline van den Bosch recorded her second career assist. Junior goalkeeper Chelsea Bigelow logged six total saves on the afternoon, five of which were recorded in the first half of play.
The Aggies will enter their next game on Thursday (Sept. 20) against Ohio with a 4-5 overall mark. The Black Bears improved to a perfect 7-0 record with the win, and will look to defend their undefeated mark against Northeastern on Friday (Sept. 21).
The No. 18 Black Bears' potent offense jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on Sunday afternoon, notching goals at the 1st, 12th, 19th, and 26th minute marks.
But the UC Davis defense continued to battle, limiting the Black Bears to just one corner opportunity in the first half, with Bigelow's five-save effort supported by a defensive save from Matthew.
Then with just under five minutes left to play in the first, a corner for UC Davis would prove golden as Wong notched her first career goal to put the Aggies on the board. Fellow freshman Eline van den Bosch was credited with her second assist of the season.
But the second half would see three more scores from Maine, lifting the undefeated Black Bears to a 7-1 win over UC Davis on Sunday afternoon at Moulton Winder Field in Burlington, Vt.
UC Davis is slated to resume action on Thursday (Sept. 20) at 1 p.m. (PT)/ 4 p.m. (ET) at Ohio, with a quick turnaround before facing Central Michigan in a neutral-site match on Friday (Sept. 21) at 3 p.m. (PT)/ 6 p.m. (ET).
