Late goals lift Catamounts past Aggies

UC Davis (4-4) returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 16) at 8 a.m. (PT)/ 11 a.m. (ET) facing America East colleague No. 18 Maine.

BURLINGTON, Vt.— Junior forward Lauren Gengarella notched the tying goal for UC Davis early in the second half, but a pair of late goals by the Catamounts would prove too much to overcome, resulting in a 3-1 victory for Vermont on Friday afternoon at Moulton Winder Field in Burlington, Vt.

Junior goalkeeper Chelsea Bigelow tallied eight total saves on the afternoon—all of which were recorded in the second half.

The Aggies will enter their next game on Sunday (Sept. 16) against No. 18 Maine with an even 4-4 mark. The host Catamounts improved to 2-4 on the year and are scheduled to face Cornell in their next game on Sunday.

The Catamounts were first to get on the board on Friday afternoon, logging 1-0 advantage just under half way through the first period. Of the Aggies' five shots taken in the first half, four required Vermont goalkeeper Sierra Espeland to make a save. But the Aggies would enter halftime trailing by one as the first period would see no other scores from either squad.

UC Davis came out strong in the second half, tying things up, 1-1, thanks to Gengarella's third goal of the season. The junior forward now co-leads the Aggies alongside freshman Eline van den Bosch with a team-high seven points on three goals and an assist. Freshman midfielder Milou Korthouwer was credited with the assist, marking the first of her collegiate career.

Vermont then managed to reclaim the lead in the 61st minute before notching its third and final goal of the day less than one minute later, with both goals scored off the stick of senior forward Landon Warren.

The Aggies would take four more shots before the end of the game, but could not connect, resulting in a 3-1 victory for Vermont.

Friday's game also marked the season debut for redshirt sophomore Sara Janetzky who returned to the turf for the first time since 2016 after suffering a season-ending injury last season.
