OGDEN, Utah -  UC Davis frustrated San Diego all night long during its 2018 home opener last weekend, and its special teams unit played a key role in football's success. The Aggies defeated the Toreros, 54-21, which led to sophomore punter Daniel Whelan earning ROOT SPORTS Special Teams Player of the Week.

The Aggies, who enter Saturday's 11 a.m. game at Stanford with a 2-0 record, now have two Player of the Week awards this season with redshirt freshman running back Ulonzo Gilliam collecting the first for his breakout debut at San José State in football's season opener.

Whelan amassed 285 yards on seven punt attempts, with the longest kick traveling 58 yards. In addition to all three of those career-high figures, the Rancho Mirage native majoring in pre-landscape architecture recorded three kicks that landed inside the 20.

In the first half, San Diego never crossed its 37-yard line since it was pinned deep in its own territory; one Torero drive started on the one-yard line, another started on USD's seven. For the first 22 minutes of the game, the Toreros' average drive start took place on its nine-yard line.

UC Davis will head to Stanford this Saturday for the fourth Farm vs. Farm matchup in program history, the Pac-12 Networks' national broadcast will begin at 11 a.m. Click here to purchase your tickets for the Aggies' final non-conference game of the season in the team's section at Stanford Stadium.
