Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Defense keeps Aggies within striking distance vs. Miami

The Aggies are set to resume play on Thursday (Sept. 6) at Longwood—the first of an eight-game road trip for UC Davis—as they visit Virginia, Vermont, Ohio, and Indiana, before returning home on Oct. 5 to open America East Conference play against Pacific at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility at 3 p.m.

DAVIS, Calif. — A strong defensive performance from UC Davis, led by a five-save first half from junior goalkeeper Chelsea Bigelow, held Miami scoreless in the first period of Saturday's non-conference match. But the Redhawks were first to break the silence in the second half, taking a 1-0 lead with 28 minutes remaining before notching their second just five minutes later. The Aggies continued to battle, forcing a save by the Miami goalkeeper in the 69th minute, but the deficit would prove too much to overcome for UC Davis, lifting the Redhawks to a 2-0 win on Saturday afternoon at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility.

The Aggies will enter their next game against Longwood on Sept. 6 with an even 2-2 overall mark, while the Redhawks will cap off their Northern California tour at California on Sept. 2 with a 3-1 record.

The Aggies threatened early with a shot by junior Tatiana Arias missing just wide off a drawn penalty corner opportunity in the sixth minute, but neither the Aggies nor the Redhawks would find the back of the cage in the first half of play. The Aggies kept the Miami offense at arms length, fending off nine shots and a penalty corner, with five of Bigelow's seven total saves on the day recorded in the first half.

But the Redhawks matched pace with a strong start to the second half, drawing a corner and taking three shots within the first four minutes before leading scorer Paula Portugal gave Miami a 1-0 advantage with her fourth goal of the year.

Following a second goal by Miami in the 47th minute, the Aggies continued to battle with freshman Eline van den Bosch forcing a save by the Redhawks' goalkeeper late in the half, but the deficit would prove too much to overcome for the Aggies, resulting in a 2-0 win for Miami.
