DAVIS, Calif. -- After senior
Kelley Kramer halved the Owls' lead off a penalty stroke in the first half of Friday's home opener, UC Davis freshmen
Eline van den Bosch and
Milou Korthouwer each recorded their first career goals, helping the Aggies score three unanswered goals en route to a 3-2 come from behind victory over Temple at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility in Davis, Calif.
"Today's win means so much to this team and this program because of the investments that we've made and have talked about over the past year," said head coach
Britt Broady. "It's a really long journey to make changes and this is just a little bit of affirmation that when you put in the work, you see results."
"It's a great first game, but it's a long season and we still have a lot of work to do," said Broady. "We're very pleased to have this as a springboard for the rest of the year and I expect us to continue growing and developing with each game."
Last season, UC Davis fell in overtime on the road against Temple, 2-3, but the Aggies found a way to turn the tables on the Owls with today's comeback win.
"We kept fighting, and flipped it around after our first half wasn't so strong," said sophomore captain
Nicola Prebble. "We really grew as a team and were able to apply what we've learned over the past two weeks," Prebble added.
"I think we have really positive vibes heading into Sunday's game and hopefully we can push through and get another win in front of our home crowd," Prebble added.
The Aggies improved to 1-0 on the season and are scheduled to face Providence on Sunday (Aug. 26) at 11 a.m. at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility. The Owls fell to an 0-1 mark and will face America East colleague Pacific in their next match on Sunday.
The Owls were first to get on the board during Friday's season opener, taking a quick 2-0 lead over the Aggies with 40 minutes remaining in the first half.
But after drawing a penalty stroke in the 34th minute, UC Davis halved the Owls' lead thanks to a conversion by senior back
Kelley Kramer.
Trailing by one, the second half would bring new life to the Aggies, as they doubled their corner opportunities from the first period and out-shot the Owls 11-9.
Then in the 43rd minute, the Aggies found what they were looking for after freshman midfielder
Eline van den Bosch tied the game at two-all off a corner play with her first collegiate goal. Fellow freshman
Isabella Porco and redshirt senior
Nica Taglieri were credited with the assist.
The two squads continued to battle over the next 25 minutes, with neither able to find the back of the cage, making overtime seem inevitable.
Then with 1:26 remaining in regulation, the Aggies had a chance to claim the lead with a corner opportunity. Following a shot from junior forward
Tatiana Arias and save by the Temple goalkeeper, freshman midfielder
Milou Korthouwer regained control of the rebound and notched her first ever goal as an Aggie.
The Owls could not find an answer for the Aggies' late comeback, resulting in a 3-2 victory for UC Davis.
The Aggies are scheduled to resume action this Sunday (Aug. 26) hosting Providence at 11:00 a.m. at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility.
