DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis junior Meghan Bradbury finished 2-for-3 to pace the offense, but No. 17 Long Beach State struck for three runs in the fifth and didn't allow an Aggie past second base on the day en route to a 4-0 victory in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at La Rue Field.
UC Davis fell to 25-23 overall and 7-11 in Big West Conference play heading into its final weekend series of the regular season against Hawai'i next Friday and Saturday. The 49ers improved to 40-11 overall and 14-4 in league play, limiting the Aggies to just six baserunners on the afternoon.
Freshmen Brooke Yanez and Aly Gomonet added base hits for the Aggies, but the home side could not come up with a run, stranding runners at first and second in the third and fourth innings, and another in scoring position in the seventh after Bradbury's second hit of the day.
Long Beach State took advantage of an error to break up a scoreless deadlock between the two sides, plating a pair of unearned runs as part of a three-run fifth. A throwing error on a sacrifice attempt allowed Julia Lombardi to score from second base for a 1-0 lead, then the 49ers tacked on two more thanks to a Nichole Fry sacrifice fly and a single to left by Tierra Falo for the three-run advantage.
A Naomi Hernandez home run in the seventh - her fourth of the season - capped the scoring for Long Beach State.
Yanez (14-10) stymied the 49er bats through the first four innings, allowing only a pair of hits and three base runners before the visitors finally broke through. The freshman, who went all 12 innings in the series opening victory, allowed just two earned on five hits in her 22nd complete game of the season.
Right-hander Cielo Meza earned the start for the second straight game and retired the first seven batters she faced - finishing with five of her six strikeouts in that span - before running into trouble in the third and lasting only 2.2 innings. Marissa Jauregui was hit by a pitch with one out and Alyse Rojas walked two batters later with two away to chase Meza from the contest.
Devyn Magnett (10-5) entered in relief and gave up an infield single to Aly Gomonet, but the 49ers got an out at third on the play to end the threat. Magnett, who allowed just three hits the rest of the way, pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, striking out one to earn the win.
The Aggies' final series of the regular season against the Rainbow Wahine opens with a 3 p.m. first pitch on Friday (May 11), before closing with a doubleheader at Noon on Saturday (May 12).
