Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Four Aggies collected hits and junior left-hander Sara Cadona was solid in three innings of relief in the circle on Friday afternoon, but visiting Hawai'i used a five-run third to break open a scoreless contest and lift the Rainbow Wahine to a 6-0 win over host UC Davis in the opener of a three-game Big West Conference series at La Rue Field.

The loss dropped the Aggies to 25-24 overall and 7-12 in league play, but had only one runner reach second base on the day thanks to an Alyse Rojas double in the sixth.

Backed by a four-hit, nine-strikeout, shutout from starter Dana Thomsen (15-15), Hawai'i improved to 23-25 overall and 7-12 in the Big West with the victory.

Thomson retired 12 straight at one point after Isabella Leon's two-out infield single in the first. A single by Meghan Bradbury with two outs in the fifth ended Thomson's run, and senior Ashley Lotoszynski's liner back through the box opened the seventh, but that would be all for the Aggies.

Meanwhile, one big inning was more than enough for the Rainbow Wahine, who sent nine batters to the plate in the third. A hit batter and back-to-back singles loaded the bases with no outs, before a ground ball to short in a drawn-in infield allowed UC Davis to erase the lead runner at the plate for the first out.

That brought up Rachel Turner, who lined a single that glanced off the glove of a diving Aly Gomonet to drive in the first run of the inning, and Hawai'i tacked on four more with one swing of the bat after Callee Heen lined a grand slam to right centerfield - her 14th home run of the season - for a 5-0 advantage.

The Rainbow Wahine tacked on a single run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Turner to camp the scoring.

Freshman Brooke Yanez (14-11) suffered the loss, allowing the five runs on five hits and striking out four in four innings of work. Cadona, who entered to start the fifth, retired the first four hitters she faced - and seven of the first eight - allowing an unearned run on two hits.

Danielle Garcielita finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored for Hawai'i to lead all hitters.

The two teams meet in a doubleheader on Saturday (May 12) at noon to close out the regular season at La Rue Field. UC Davis senior Ashley Lotoszynski will be honored as part of "Senior Day" festivities on the field at the conclusion of the doubleheader.
