DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis offense created a number of chances in Sunday afternoon's Big West Conference doubleheader with UC Santa Barbara, but the Aggies were unable to cash them in, falling by the scores of 2-1 and 4-0 to close out the weekend at La Rue Field.
The defeats dropped UC Davis to 21-14 overall on the year and evened its record at 3-3 in league play after the first two weekends of action. The Gauchos, who entered the weekend winless after their opening series, improved to 15-24 overall and 2-4 in the Big West.
Freshman Aly Gomonet and junior Meghan Bradbury each had two hits in the opener, while sophomore Marisa Given was 2-for-2 in game two, but UC Davis spent the day in search of the "big hit," leaving 10 runners on base in each end of the doubleheader -- including six runners stranded in scoring position in each contest.
Big West play continues on the road for the Aggies next weekend as UC Davis heads to San Luis Obispo, Calif., for a three-game series at Cal Poly. The teams open with a doubleheader on Saturday (April 14) at 1 p.m., and concludes the series with a single game on Sunday (April 15) at 1 p.m.
GAME 1: UC SANTA BARBARA 2, UC DAVIS 1
Meghan Bradbury and Aly Gomonet each had a pair of hits to pace the offense, and the Aggies put together a seventh-inning rally that fell a run short on Sunday afternoon as the Gauchos took the opener, 2-1.
After UC Santa Barbara took an early 2-0 lead on a third-inning error and an RBI single by Alyssa Diaz in the fifth, sophomore Frankie Mendoza broke up the shutout in the home half of the fifth after UC Davis had loaded the bases with one out on a fielder's choice, a hit batter, and a single by senior Ashley Lotoszynski.
Mendoza's ball sent the first pitch she saw right back to the circle where it was knocked down by Felisha Noriega, bit the Gauchos' hurler was unable to immediately find the ball. By the time she recovered to throw Mendoza out by a step at first, Gomonet had scampered home to make it a one-run game.
After both teams went quietly in the sixth and the Aggies worked around a one-out single in the seventh, UC Davis had a golden chance to force extra innings in its last at-bats. Gomonet led-off the frame by lacing a double to the gap in left centerfield on the eighth pitch of her at-bat, and was moved up 60 feet on Isabella Leon's ground ball to the right side.
Noriega, however, got out of the jam by inducing a pop-up and a ground ball to third after a lengthy battle with Mendoza to end the game.
Freshman left-hander Brooke Yanez (12-5) suffered the loss, allowing one earned on four hits and striking out six while going the distance for the 16th time in 17 starts this year. Noriega (4-5) also went the distance for the win, allowing just the one run on seven hits and striking out two, helped along by teammate Maci Fines, who finished with three of the team's four hits on the day.
Leon and freshman Alyse Rojas each collected hits to extend their respective hitting streaks to six games
Newcomer Alyse Rojas and sophomore Isabella Leon extended their respective hitting streaks to six games with hits in the opener, while UC Davis had runners in scoring position in five of the seven innings.
GAME 2: UC SANTA BARBARA 4, UC DAVIS 0
UC Santa Barbara's Emily Schuttish scatted just four hits and struck out five, including stranding the bases loaded full of Aggies twice on the day, lifting the Gauchos to a 4-0 win in the nightcap.
Sophomore Marisa Given finished 2-for-2, while junior Meghan Bradbury and sophomore Maddie Rojas also collected singles on the day, but the Aggies couldn't push across a run.
UC Santa Barbara put up three runs in the third off UC Davis starter Katie Kibby (8-6) on an RBI single by Sierra Altmeyer and a two-run single by Melanie Menor for the early lead, while Alyssa Diaz added a run-scoring single of her own in the fourth for the final advantage, giving Schuttish (3-3) more than enough support on the day.
A walk and a pair of hit batters loaded the bases with two outs in the second for the Aggies, who also had three runners on in the fourth after a Given single that broke up Schuttish's no-hit bid, another hit batter, and a single by Maddie Rojas. However, a pair of ground balls took the Gauchos off the hook as UCSB also turned away rally attempts in the fifth and sixth innings.
Schuttish went the distance while scattering the four hits, striking out five against only one walk to even her record in the circle on the year. Kibby, who shut out the Gauchos on seven hits in the series opener on Saturday, was charged with four runs on 10 hits over 3.1 innings of work before giving way to Yanez, who tossed 3.2 innings of one-hit softball in relief to keep her side in the game.
