DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Riley Siegel and sophomore Isabella Leon each slugged home runs in support of sophomore right-hander Katie Kibby, who scattered seven hits en route to her fourth shutout of the season, lifting UC Davis to a 2-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Conference series opener on Saturday afternoon at La Rue Field.
In front of a number of former Aggie greats in attendance as part of the program's Alumni Weekend, UC Davis won its third straight to improve to 21-12 overall and 3-1 in conference play - the best start to a league slate since the 2016 squad also opened with three wins in its first four Big West contests.
The Gauchos, who stranded eight runners on base - five of those in scoring position - for the game, fell to 13-24 overall on the season and remained winless in league at 0-4.
Siegel's solo blast - her second of the year - to lead off the third cleared the wall in centerfield to open the scoring and was joined three innings later by Leon's shot down the left field line - her third of the season - for the only runs of the contest, as Kibby and the Aggie defense left UCSB runners in scoring position in five of the seven innings.
That was more than enough for Kibby (8-5), who recorded her second shutout in as many starts on just 81 pitches and extended her scoreless innings streak to 13.1 innings of work dating back to the series opener at CSUN last weekend, retiring seven straight hitters at one point on Saturday. The four shutouts by Kibby this season rank sixth on the school's Division I single-season list, just two shy of her total from last season, which stands third.
Emily Schuttish (2-3) suffered the loss for the Gauchos, allowing the two runs while holding UC Davis to just five hits on the day, striking out five without walking a batter.
Leon, along with teammate Alyse Rojas, each finished 2-for-3 on the day, extending their respective hitting streaks to five games each in the win. For Rojas, it was her team-best 15th multi-hit game of the season, while Leon recorded her seventh.
The two teams return to the diamond on Sunday (April 8) at Noon, concluding the series with a doubleheader at La Rue Field.
UC Davis softball alumni joined the 2018 Aggies for an impromptu team photo at La Rue Field on Saturday as part of Alumni Weekend festivities.
