Final Stats
STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore attacker Sorana Larson scored two goals while senior co-captain Kate Fellner added a goal and an assist, but UC Davis ultimately was outmatched by No. 13 Stanford, falling to its former conference foe by a 18-6 final in women's lacrosse action at Cagan Stadium Thursday night.
The Aggies even their record to 5-5 for the year. The Cardinal, ranked 13th by both Inside Lacrosse and the IWLCA, improves to 10-3 overall.
Larson scored a goal in each half, while Fellner, Amanda Outcalt, Taylor Cuenin and Kelsey DeJesus each added one. Sophomore Kate Graham notched the only other UC Davis assist. Junior goalkeeper Grace Richards totaled nine saves and six ground balls, including seven crease stops in the first half.
For Stanford, freshman Galen Lew and senior Kelsey Murray each performed hat tricks, with the latter scoring all three to boost her team to a 10-3 halftime edge. Freshman Ali Baiocco added two goals and an assist, while goalie Allie DaCar led the defensive effort with 12 saves. The Cardinal also dominated the draw by a 20-7 margin, with defender Julia Massaro leading all players with nine.
Stanford won all seven draws in the first 10 minutes to take a 5-1 lead. Outcalt had the only Aggie goal in that span, even thought UC Davis matched its hosts shooting, 8-8. Larson netted her first goal of the game to interrupt that Cardinal run, but Stanford then hit five unanswered to extend its lead to 10-2.
Larson's eight-meter goal in the 39th minute and Fellner's strike after recovering from a dropped ball three minutes each cut the deficit to eight goals, but the Aggies never approached any closer down the stretch. Stanford outshot its guest by a 17-7 edge in the second half, and UC Davis suffered 13 turnovers after the break.
The Aggies kick off Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at San Diego State on Sunday. Stanford was previously a member of that conference, but left to help form the inaugural Pac-12 Conference for women's lacrosse this year.
