Aggies fall in series finale to Highlanders

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Brooke Yanez smacked a double that led to UC Davis' first run of the game while junior Meghan Bradbury slugged her first home run of the season to make it a one-run game in the seventh, but the Aggies' rally came up just short, falling in the series finale against UC Riverside, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at La Rue Field.

The loss dropped UC Davis to 24-17 overall and evened its Big West Conference mark at 6-6, while the Highlanders improved to 27-19 overall and 4-8 in league play.

Hailey Dolcini (12-7) kept the Aggies off-balance for most of the day, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth and allowing only three baserunners on a trio of walks to that point. Yanez, however, greeted her with a ringing double off the top of the wall in right field to break up the no-hit bid - one of only two hits the Riverside right-hander would surrender on the day.

She finished allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four in the complete-game effort en route to the win.

An RBI single by Seanna Garewal in the second and two runs in the fifth via a double by Jenna Curtan and a sac fly off the bat of Hannah Rodriguez staked UC Riverside to the early lead.

The Aggies answered back in the fifth thanks to Yanez's double that got things started as pinch-runner Kiana Lee was sacrificed to third and came home to score when Alyse Rojas' ground ball was thrown wide at first, allowing Lee to score and make it 3-1.

UC Davis went quietly in the sixth, but Bradbury woke up the home crowd in the seventh with a moon shot to left - the fourth of her career - to make it a 3-2 ball game with two outs. Pinch hitter Caroline Figueroa reached on a single that fell in just behind the second base bag to keep the rally going, but Dolcini worked away from any further damage, inducing a pop-up to end the game.

The home run by Bradbury was the first for the human development major since she capped off a five-RBI day against Nevada with a pair of home runs on Feb. 19, 2016.

Yanez (13-8) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on only four hits while striking out four over seven innings, retiring nine of the final 10 batters she faced - allowing only a walk in that span - to keep her side close. Sophomore cognitive science major Isabella Leon walked twice to extend her reached base safely streak to six consecutive games - the longest active streak by an Aggie.

UC Davis hits the road for the final time this season next weekend, heading to Southern California to take on league-leading Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series on April 28-29 at Anderson Family Field. Play begins at Noon on both days as the first two games of the series will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
