Aggies' hit parade leads to twinbill sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 April 21, 2018

Box Score - Game 1 | Box Score - Game 2

DAVIS, Calif. -- Nine different Aggies collected multiple hits on the day and the UC Davis offense banged out a total of 25 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep of visiting UC Riverside by the scores of 3-2 in eight innings and 9-2 on Saturday afternoon at La Rue Field.

In winning their second Big West Conference series of the season, the Aggies improved to 24-16 overall and 6-5 in league play -- surpassing last year's win total and putting them just two victories shy of the program's Division I record for wins set in 2010.

The Highlanders fell to 26-19 overall and 3-8 in the Big West with the losses.

Six different UC Davis hitters finished with three hits, while freshman Aly Gomonet and Riley Siegel combined to drive in six of the team's 12 runs on the day -- the latter slugging her third home run of the season in her team's game two win.

The Aggies go for their first Big West series sweep since 2015 with the final game of the three-game set against UC Riverside on Sunday (April 22) at 1 p.m., at La Rue Field.

GAME 1: UC DAVIS 3, UC RIVERSIDE 2 (8 INN.)
Meghan Bradbury's double to the left field corner with no outs in the bottom of the eighth walked the Aggies' off in the opener, plating Maddie Rojas from second with the winning run and lifting UC Davis to a 3-2 extra-inning victory.

The Aggies scored all three of their runs in the final three innings after stranding five baserunners in the first five innings, but none bigger than Bradbury's extra-base hit after Maddie Rojas lined a single back through the box, and Brooke Yanez blooped a base hit down the right field line to set the stage.

That brought up Bradbury, who fell behind in the count 0-2 before sneaking her double just inside in the left field line, taking one bounce up against the fence and allowing Rojas to motor home with the game-winner.

Yanez (13-7) went the distance in the circle for the win, scattering just the two runs on five hits while striking out nine without a walk, retiring 12 straight batters at one point from the second to sixth innings.

Hailey Dolcini (11-7) took the loss after reentering the game in the seventh, allowing three runs on nine hits and striking out five over six innings. Taylor Misfeldt pitched an inning in relief, allowing three hits and striking out one.

Hannah Rodriguez's RBI single up the middle in the sixth broke the scoreless deadlock, scoring Danielle Ortega for the 1-0 lead. The Aggies answered back quickly in their half of the inning to take the lead after Isabella Leon led off with a single and moved to second two batters later when Ashley Lotoszynski walked on a 12-pitch at-bat.

Maddie Rojas, who led all hitters with a 3-for-4 day, then reached on an infield single that was smothered by second baseman Brittney Garcia to save a run, but Yanez did well to help herself, working the count full before dropping a deep single into the gap in right centerfield, scoring Leon and Lotoszynski for the 2-1 advantage.

Chelsey Holley's second home run of the year with one out in the seventh brought the Highlanders even once again, but Yanez got a fly ball and a strikeout to end the rally and allowed only a two-out single in the eighth to set the stage for the Aggies' walk-off.

Freshman Alyse Rojas finished 2-for-4 to log her 18th multi-hit game of the season -- the most by an Aggie since Alex Holmes finished with 19 such performances in 2010 -- while Yanez finished 2-for-4 at the plate.

GAME 2: UC DAVIS 9, UC RIVERSIDE 2
UC Davis rallied, once again, from an early deficit to take the nightcap, scoring three times in the third to erase a two-run deficit, and broke the game wide open with six runs in the next two innings en route to the 9-2 victory.

Isabella Leon's two-out run scoring chopper off the third baseman's glove got the scoring started after Caoline Figueroa and Marisa Given reached on singles to start the inning. Siegel then followed with a two-run to left centerfield for a 3-2 advantage the Aggies would not relinquish.

Gomonet's two-run double to left field that was almost hauled in by the outfielder with a leaping attempt, scored pinch runner Bradbury and Given to make it 5-2, and then UC Davis threatened to invoke the run-rule in the fifth, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four times for the final 9-2 tally.

Siegel's home run -- a blast over the wall in left -- got the scoring started as Given drove in another with a bases-loaded walk, Alyse Rojas plated another with a single back through the middle, and Gomonet followed with a run-scoring ground out.

Sophomore right-hander Katie Kibby (10-6) earned the win for the Aggies, allowing the two runs on eight hits and striking out two in the complete-game effort. She stranded 10 runners on base -- including six of those in scoring position -- and got a huge fly ball double play to end the second with the bases loaded as Alyse Rojas threw a strike to the plate, where Siegel applied the tag to end the inning.

Tayler Misfelt (14-10) suffered the loss for the Highlanders, allowing six runs on nine hits and striking out three over four innings of work.

Siegel, Given, and Ashley Lotoszynski, each finished with two hits, as did Bradbury, who came off the bench to finish 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored. In all, eight of the nine hitters in the UC Davis batting order finished with at least one hit, while Gomonet and Siegel drove in a career-high three runs.
